The Mobile Learning @ CUHK Project
Typical medium-prized mobile devices, such as mobile phones and light-weight notebook computers, are often equipped with internet-connection ability (e.g. WIFI or 3G) and have computer-processing capabilities that allow running quite sophisticated programs. Possible tasks that can be handled by these mobile devices, thus, are nearly comparable to those accomplishable on a desktop computer, including, surfing the web, reading eBooks, opening/ editing Word documents, connecting with people, and creating/ editing multimedia files. Also, mobile devices certainly outperform desktop computers in portability. The potential of using mobile devices as a true 'anytime, anywhere, anyplace' learning device is significant. Many studies have already indicated that this trend is inevitable. The Mobile Learning project at CUHK was a TDG project initiated by ITSC and CLEAR in 2010 to pursue possibilities in enhancing the teaching and learning environment and processes through the use of various mobile technologies. To make mobile learning work and become a sustainable teaching and learning strategy in our University, we suggest taking a comprehensive approach to the task. The project focuses on provision of practical guidelines, resources and sustainable technical solutions to each of the key components of mobile learning: mobile-ready course content, mobile learning-oriented student support services, other learning materials on mobile devices, access to www resources, student-student mobile interactions, and teacher-student mobile interactions.
